(Bloomberg) — Carvana Co. wiped out about half of its market value in just two trading sessions as the stock plunged to an all-time low on deepening gloom about used-car sales.

Shares of the online dealer have sunk 49% in the two trading days since the company reported disappointing third-quarter results late on Thursday, bringing its once-lofty market capitalization down to about $1.3 billion from $2.6 billion before the earnings miss. That’s a far cry from the $60 billion valuation the firm commanded last year.
Carvana, which allows its customers to buy a car from anywhere, saw its market value skyrocket last year when supply challenges in new-car production caused a surge in demand for used vehicles. That helped lure investors hungry for Covid-lockdown bets, especially given Carvana’s focus on at-home purchasing.
But the environment is changing as supply snarls ease, auto production gradually normalizes and the cost of used cars are falling fast. Plus, the Federal Reserve’s fight against inflation has sent interest rates higher, raising the cost of financing vehicle purchases and weighing on consumer demand.
The closely watched Manheim Used Vehicle Value Index, which tracks used-vehicle prices, dropped in October for a fifth-straight month, down 10.6% from a year earlier. It’s the biggest such decline in the almost 28-year history of the index.
For Wall Street analysts, the shift presents a substantial challenge to Carvana’s business. On Friday, Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas pulled his rating on the company, saying the stock could be worth as little as $1 as the deteriorating used-car market and volatile interest-rate and funding environment “add material risk to the outlook.”
Analysts’ average price target on the company has fallen roughly 30% since Thursday’s close.
“Cars are extremely expensive, and they’re extremely sensitive to interest rates,” Carvana Chief Executive Officer Ernie Garcia said on a conference call with analysts last week.

Wall Street and investment firm leaders have been prominent in the list of top individual donors ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, with influential megadonors growing as a percentage of overall contributions, according to OpenSecrets. Most of top donors this cycle are the same people who have topped political contribution lists in past years, with a few exceptions, including cryptocurrency billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, who has emerged as a major Democrat supporter, and his FTX co-CEO, Ryan Salame, who backs Republicans, the data show. Bankman-Fried on Tuesday announced he would sell FTX's non-U.S. unit to crypto giant Binance, which said it would help cover a "liquidity crunch" at the rival exchange, marking an abrupt change in fortune for Bankman-Fried.
Shares of Carvana (NYSE: CVNA) are driving lower once again, dropping 1.7% at 11:33 a.m. ET on Tuesday as the broader market rises. While there was no specific news today to push shares lower, Carvana got hammered yesterday, as well, because the used-car market is running into a ditch. The Federal Reserve's fight to lower inflation "may lead to a downturn" as the central bank's interest rate increases are "challenged" by still-high consumer savings, still-tight labor markets and ongoing supply problems, Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said on Wednesday. "Our tools to quiet demand and return inflation to our 2% target operate with a lag and have been challenged by the artificial elements of today’s environment," Barkin said in remarks prepared for delivery to the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber in Winchester, Virginia. "As a result, bringing supply and demand back into alignment may require still more from us, creating risk to the broader economy," Barkin said.
